When Stephens' mother succumbed to ill health two years ago, everything changed. Stephens began her career as an editor for Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company. Her love for the theater and books led her to Los Angeles where she established a theater and film production company, producing over thirty plays including "Hannah Senesh" about the life of Israel's national heroine, "The Normal Heart" about the AIDS epidemic starring Richard Dreyfuss and Kathy Bates, and "To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday," a family drama in which a college professor comes to terms with the loss of his wife in a sailing accident. Loren also served as executive producer for the Emmy nominated PBS documentary, "Legacy of the Hollywood Blacklist," narrated by Burt Lancaster; the bilingual documentary, "Los Pastores: The Shepherd's Play," about Hispanic folk traditions in the Rio Grande Valley produced for KCET/Los Angeles; and the docudrama, "Sojourner Truth: Ain't I a Woman?" starring Julie Harris and Roscoe Lee Browne, on the life of the famous abolitionist and suffragette, Sojourner Truth, produced for Coronet Films and New World Television, which won a National Golden Apple from the National Education Association. Loren's films and stage productions focused on historically important events, and individuals who dramatically impacted the social and political climate in which they lived. Her decision to undertake a project was always based on finding a compelling story that would move an audience.
